Texas Hold'em poker is a card game. It is played with a typical 52 card deck. Hold'em can be played with as little as two players up to a max of eleven players. Regular poker hand ranks apply to this game (click here for basic poker hand ranks).
The typical hold'em game goes as follows:
Preflop:
Each player is dealt two cards face down. These are the player's private cards and should not be shown to anyone else. Each player looks at their cards and a round of betting ensues. As always, play stars to the left of the dealer and each player can either "bet", "raise", or "fold" depending on how strong they feel their cards are.
If a player "raises" by increasing the bet, then subsequent players must either match that raise ("call") or fold (put down their cards). This way, everyone still playing (ie. hasn't folded) has contributed an equal amount of money to the "pot".
Flop:
The dealer turns over three cards in the middle of the table (called "the flop"). These are community cards that each player can use to create the best hand possible out of. Once again betting occurs.
Turn:
The dealer turns over another card making four community cards. This fourth card is called "the turn" or sometimes "fourth street". Betting occurs again.
River:
The dealer turns over the fifth and last community card. This is called "the river" or "fifth street". Betting occurs for the last time. After betting is complete, players reveal their two private cards and the player with the best possible 5-card hand wins the pot. To make your hand, you can use any combination of the community cards and your two private cards.
